The European project HERCULES-2 is a research and development programme for new technologies for ship engines. In work package group 4 “Near-Zero Emissions Engines”, the reduction of nitric oxides by means of SCR-systems is studied.
The synthesis of ammonia from aqueous urea solution is studied within a subproject at ITV. The whole process chain is studied by means of a modular hot gas test rig, which offers a wide range of operation and allows investigations under pressure. For this various (laser-) optical measurement methods are applied, e.g. particle image velocimetry (PIV) to obtain velocity vector fields, phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) to measure droplet spectra and shadowgraphy techniques to characterize sprays.
